Jones-time Massacre Extended

|

Mecklenburg County employees who thought their jobs were safe from the budget axe got a rude awakening this week, when County Manager Harry Jones distributed a revised schedule for department reduction-in-force plans.

The original timeline called for Jones’s executive team to have the potential layoffs approved by the end of April. That apparently has been amended, as the county’s current-year budget shortfall continues to spiral out of control, potentially reaching upwards of $120 million.

In preparation for even deeper cuts, department directors have been informed that the manager’s executive team’s approval of layoffs has been extended to May 18, to align with Jones unveiling his recommended budget to the board of commissioners.

Bottom line: county employees who thought their jobs were safe have been tossed back into the reduction-in-force shark’s pit, already swirling with blood in the water.

Meanwhile, Jones is holding tight to the $30K-plus, so-called performance bonus that commissioners tossed him last year.
