Tossed out for general discussion and debate; feedback and comments encouraged:

* Convicted murderer Ronnie Lee Gardner was executed by firing squad in Utah last night. Would you have pulled the trigger? Not just philosophically, as in supporting the death penalty; but literally, as in stepping behind the firing line?

* Mayor Anthony Foxx has ordered city flags to be flown at half-staff for a week, in honor and remembrance of Susan Burgess. Is a whole week excessive, or appropriate?

* U.S. Representative Joe Barton, a Texas Republican, apologized to BP Chief Executive Officer Tony Hayward for the grilling he received yesterday on Capital Hill, and accused the White House of a “shakedown” for pressuring BP to set up a $20-billion fund for disaster claims from the Gulf oil spill. Barton retracted his comments, after being lambasted in the press and drawing heat from Republican Party leaders. Should Barton have apologized? And should he have apologized for his apology?
