Captain America-ish

|

captainamerica_head3Leave it to Hollywood to find a way to neuter an American superhero, in pursuit of a more multi-cultural, one-world friendly, kind of super, but not in a potentially offensive way, hero.

That’s the direction a new movie based on the comic book hero Captain America, slated for release next summer, is reportedly headed. This from The L.A. Times’ interview with director Joe Johnston, explaining his spin and vision for “Captain America: The First Avenger”:

“We’re sort of putting a slightly different spin on Steve Rogers,” – Captain America’s alter-ego – “He’s a guy that wants to serve his country, but he’s not a flag-waver. We’re reinterpreting, sort of, what the comic book version of Steve Rogers was.”

“He wants to serve his country, but he’s not this sort of jingoistic American flag-waver,” Johnston said. “He’s just a good person. We make a point of that in the script: Don’t change who you are once you go from Steve Rogers to this super-soldier; you have to stay who you are inside, that’s really what’s important more than your strength and everything. It’ll be interesting and fun to put a different spin on the character and one that the fans are really going to appreciate.”

That last bit, about fans appreciating the new spin, is key. Because some of the fans Johnston is likely trying to woo will almost certainly include not just Americans hot for some summer entertainment. There’s a whole overseas box-office where Hollywood movies ring up big bucks, but where red, white and blue don’t necessarily translate into green. So classic liberal Hollywood – downplay America, the evil bastion of nasty capitalism, to turn a buck.
