Let Them Eat Cake

Birthday cake, that is.

Recognizing that Mecklenburg County employees have gone two years without merit-pay raises, County Manager Harry Jones today delivered a surprise to help boost moral: an additional day of paid vacation for all county employees on their birthdays.

The gesture won’t have any budgetary impact, said County Budget Director Hyong Yi, because employees won’t receive any additional compensation; just comp time for the extra day off.

From Jones’ letter to county employees:

I am writing to let you know that, effective immediately, each Mecklenburg County employee will receive an additional day of paid vacation on their birthday in FY11.  Due to various reasons, you may not be able to use this vacation day on the exact date of your birthday (e.g., your birthday is on a weekend this year, etc.). Therefore, we will be flexible regarding when you may use this vacation day.

I recognize that many Mecklenburg County employees are facing challenges because we have been unable to provide merit pay increases for the second consecutive year.  I also know this additional day of paid vacation is not a substitute for a pay increase. Instead, it is a gesture of appreciation and recognition of your important value to this community and our organization.

Thank you for your hard work and dedication to public service.
