Rangel On The Ropes

|

As Congress heads out the door for its August recess, a growing number of Democrats are calling for Rep. Charles Rangel to head out for good.

That would include President Barack Obama, apparently, who was zinging some none-too-subtle signals during a recent interview with CBS News that it was time for Rangel to go, according to this report from Politico.

Rangel, a New York Democrat, faces a slew of 13 ethical violations including improperly using his position and office to solicit donations for a school in his name; of failing to report more than $600,000 on his financial disclosure report; and of failing to pay taxes on a villa he owns in the Dominican Republic.

“… He’s somebody who’s at the end of his career. Eighty years old,” Obama told CBS News. “I’m sure that – what he wants is to be able to – end his career with dignity. And my hope is that – it happens.”

If Rangel’s career comes to an end, with or without a resignation, it certainly won’t come with any degree of dignity.

The Hill, meanwhile, reports that eight House Democrats are now calling for their embattled and disgraced colleague to step down.

“We’ve heard Charlie in the Ways and Means Committee, and he’s addressed these charges,” Rep. John Yarmuth, a Kentucky Democrat, told the Louisville Courier-Journal. “He’s never denied they happened. He always has an explanation. You can excuse one or two (violations), but not 13.”
