Order In The Court

|

In what has become an entirely too predictable and utterly disgraceful headline, we read of yet another case of a repeat offender accused of a violent crime, this time the abduction and murder of Valerie Hamilton.

It is demonstrably clear that Mecklenburg County has a serious problem with its revolving-door criminal justice system, just ask the folks at CharMeck Court Watch (CMCW) who have spent nearly two years grappling with the repeat offender issue.

If you’re serious about wanting to change the way our criminal justice system operates, take your concerns to the polls in November and vote accordingly. A good place to start your research on candidates can be found with CMCW’s endorsements, which were released last week:

District Attorney: Andrew Murray

Superior Court: Judge Bill Constangy, Judge Hugh Lewis, Judge Eric Levinson

District Court: Judge Lisa Bell, Sean Smith, Matt Osman, Judge Theo Nixon

“CMCW has not come to endorse these candidates by chance. Since October 2008, our volunteers have spent more than 6,000 hours in meetings and multiple courtrooms observing various judges,” writes Jackie Philemon, chief administrative officer for CharMeck Court Watch. “We can continue to advance our efforts of holding criminals accountable for their crimes by electing those individuals who have demonstrated their fairness and consistency within the judicial system.”
