Fat CATS’ Cushions
Transit tax revenue is on the decline, but the good folks at Charlotte Area Transit System are still sitting pretty, even as they hike bus fares. Sitting better than pretty, actually, flush with nearly $1 million worth of new office furniture.
The city council this week approved an $897,173 contract for the purchase and installation of “modular office cubicles and furniture” for the renovated Davidson Street bus facility to support its “open space office design.”
The money comes part and parcel of the $20.7 million in federal stimulus funds that CATS nabbed earlier this year. The $897K worth of furniture and assorted office goodies will be used by about 465 CATS employees to be located at the renovated Davidson Street site. Republican councilmembers Warren Cooksey and Edwin Peacock voted against the spending spree.
“The whole stimulus program is a bad idea,” Cooksey said. “I voted against asking for it (the federal money). I voted against accepting it, and I’m voting against spending it.”
