Latino Population Control
Stone-broke Mecklenburg County is looking to hit up the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services for grants totaling upwards of $385,0000 to support “family planning services to the Latino population.” The funding would include a one-time grant of $10,000 to purchase “expensive long-acting contraceptives.”
Mecklenburg commissioners will be asked at their meeting Tuesday night to approve the submission of the grant applications that would be used for the expansion of services to provide comprehensive pregnancy prevention services to local Latino families.
Ironically, commissioners are slated to also discuss Tuesday night a controversial proposal being pitched by Republican Commissioner Bill James, to have the county Department of Social Services report to the sheriff’s office or immigration officials illegal aliens who have applied for welfare or food stamps for their U.S.-born children.
James’ proposal comes on the heels of DSS Director Mary Wilson last month informing commissioners that 5,635 families, out of the 61,074 receiving food stamps in Mecklenburg, include at least one illegal alien. About $2.7 million was paid out in public benefits in July to children of suspected illegal aliens, according to Wilson. For a 12-month schedule, that could total more than $32 million a year.
DSS uses a verification system known as SAVE to check eligibility for welfare benefits, which can identify an applicant’s immigration status. But Wilson said that the DSS is prohibited from reporting known illegals to immigration authorities, unless there is a pending formal order of deportation.
James wants that changed and his proposal, to be discussed by the board of commissioners Tuesday night, would “require DSS to disclose to the Sheriff/ICE/Homeland Security the details of ANY individuals within their files who have been determined to be illegal under the SAVE program.”
