Mecklenburg County: We’re Number One

|

In traffic and criminal citations, that is, which were issued over the holiday’s “Booze It and Lost It” campaign. That’s no real surprise, what with greater Char-Meck being the state’s most populous area and all; stands to reason we’d have the largest number of citations.

Another convenient explanation, though, might come down to straight economics, as in local government is strapped for cash and, hey, what do you know, here’s a convenient way to raise some extra loot through a rash of enforcement taxes. The majority of citations issued appear to be for basic traffic infractions (in Mecklenburg, 3,138 for speeding vs. 360 for DWI), always big money makers for government.

Cynical? Maybe. All I know for certain is I’ve had several friends, and even some relatives of late who have gotten tagged with speeding tickets that in the past I think would’ve slipped by with a warning. I’m talking five, six mph over the limit. Coincidence? You tell me.
