Did Tea Party Bag DNC For CLT?

|

Maybe, or maybe Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Missouri Democrat, is talking out of both sides of her mouth.

From one side, McCaskill is proclaiming bitter disappointment that Charlotte topped St. Louis in the bid to land the 2012 DNC. From the other side, McCaskill is reportedly not only breathing a sigh of relief, but was actively trying to prevent the DNC from landing in St. Louis. This from The NY Times:

One of the country’s most competitive United States Senate races is also taking place in Missouri, with Senator Claire McCaaskill, a Democrat, is being heavily focused on by Republicans as she seeks re-election to a second term.

Ms. McCaskill, one of the president’s closest friends in the Senate, took her concerns directly to the White House, according to party leaders familiar with the selection process. She argued that her re-election could be complicated if the convention was held in St. Louis, because the Democratic gathering will almost certainly attract protesters and compete for fund-raising.

St. Louis, it should be noted, has a very active Tea Party contingent that has been a constant thorn in McCaskill’s side with their protests and lobbying efforts.

But then there’s this from POLITICO, revealing that McCaskill, like any good politician, actually has multiple sides of the mouth from which to speak.

A spokeswoman for McCaskill’s office would not comment directly on the New York Times report, instead passing along a quote from the senator:

“I’m bitterly disappointed at the Democratic National Committee’s choice.  I’m incredibly proud of the bid put forth by St. Louis and how bipartisan the support was. I want to thank the business community and all the local leaders, especially Mayor Slay, for their tireless efforts on behalf of the city. This was an effort we should all be proud of,” McCaskill said.

So does Charlotte have its tireless lobbying efforts, the city’s bustling diversity, and bevy of shiny uptown toys to thank for luring the circus to town, or the St. Louis Tea Party?
