Special Delivery From The USPS
Maybe the U.S. Postal Service should change its unofficial motto to ‘neither snow, nor rain, nor pricey flights to Spain and loads of porn’ will prevent delivery of the mail.
A recently released Postal Service Inspector General’s audit found that postal workers were using government-issued credit cards meant for travel and lodging expenses to buy everything from airline tickets to Spain and Italy for family and friends to Apple computers, home mortgages and purchases from “adult entertainment establishments.”
The audit also found that the Postal Service had failed to cancel nearly 2,500 credit cards issued to former employees, including 53 employees listed as deceased in employee records. And current employees who were using their credit cards for legitimate travel, instead of buying porn, time and again failed to comply with prescribed travel policies, resulting in more than $600,000 in excessive travel costs for lodging and airfare.
This would be the same mail agency, of course, that’s projecting a $7 billion loss this year after losing a record $8.5 billion last year. Most recently, the postal service warned that it’s on course to run out of money before the end of the current fiscal year, after maxing out its borrowing limit with the U.S. Treasury, and will likely be forced to default on financial obligations owed the federal government.
