Slim Pickings On Store Shelves
You read it here first.
It will not be long before your local store shelves do not have everything on them you have come to expect. Due to a variety of issues there will not be enough trucks on the road to deliver all the products and food that the growing economy demands.
A major reason is the recent recession. Shippers and brokers took advantage of low demand and put downward price pressure on rates. That along with low volume put a lot of trucking companies and drivers out of business.
The second reason is younger people do not want to drive trucks, so drivers are retiring faster than they are coming into the industry.
The third reason is government. Nobody likes trucks on the road so the restrictions on them and drivers have become more and more onerous. Currently the Federal Government, that purveyor of costs far beyond benefits, has made new rules that are exacerbating the loss of drivers.
The result is too few trucks to do what is demanded of them.
Prior to this year there have always been enough drivers. Now there are not and the problem is getting worse. If the industry can’t haul 1% of the volume requested this week, that will not get better next week. Next week the 1% will be leftover, and then 2% will not be delivered. And like dominoes it will get worse each week.
Enjoy your summer. The lack of products on the shelf along with inflation will make for an interesting one.
