Coakley Lands Slot For WBT Afternoon Drive
I always liked the work Vince Coakley did from the anchor desk during his stint with WSOC-TV. How successfully he transitions his media skills to a straight, talk-radio format is open for question; but answers won’t be too long in coming. Coakley has been named the new afternoon-drive host at WBT, filling the gap left when the station’s management, Greater (?) Media, declined to renew Tara Servatius’s contract.
Former WBT talker Pete Kaliner offers an insightful assessment of the most recent changing of the guard at his old station that’s worth a read for some good inside baseball perspectives.
I’ve had the chance to catch Coakley a few times when he’s guest hosted on WBT and was more impressed with his delivery than overall content, but maybe that’s a liability of only having partial ownership of the slot in a guest host capacity. The key will be to see if he can wholly own the show, keep it relevant, lively and informative on national and regional issues, while still retaining a local flavor and focus. That’s a big bill to fill, and I wish him well.
