Our Acorn Activist In Chief

|

President Obama, in a typical speech, threatens Social Security recipients with a cutoff of their checks if the Republicans don’t do as he tells them. He wants the debt limit raised high enough that he won’t have to bother with it again until after next year’s election. His wish list is a couple of trillion dollars to spend as he wants, with no strings attached. He can buy a lot of votes with a few trillion.

As the GOP is not cooperating, President Obama goes to his strong suit;  he fearmongers. By telling those on Social Security they might not get their checks, he intends to incite them to contact their representatives with Obama’s message: give the President what he wants so I will get my check. Typical of our current President, an Acorn Activist writ large.

Let us eat peas he says. Here are the peas. According to the Social Security Trustee’s Report of 2011, which has as members Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner and Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, the income to Social Security is more than enough to pay the obligated Social Security checks for the next three to five years. Let me repeat, Social Security has more revenue coming in than going out in retirement checks. So Social Security is solvent. It is the rest of government which is not.

What Mr. Acorn Activist is threatening to do is take the Social Security revenue, which comes in to the government every week, and use the money for something other than paying Social Security benefits. Knowing the President is a member of the Ruling Class (see Codevilla) and that laws which apply to the rest of us don’t apply to him, it is still worthwhile to point out a different side of Social Security law.

Employers are required by law to withhold from their employee’s paychecks 7.65 percent of their earnings and add an equal amount, making the total the employee has taken from his earnings 15.3 percent, which must be forwarded to the IRS in a timely fashion. Now the IRS doesn’t like employers to use the term IRS on the checks written to the government; the IRS wants checks written to the US Treasury, but it’s the IRS taking the money and enforcing the law so people often write IRS. But the IRS doesn’t want people thinking it gets the money, so we have to help them in their fantasy. But back to the story.

If the employer withholds the money from the employee and doesn’t send it in, the employer will, outside of normal corporate law, be held personally responsible for not forwarding those taxes to the IRS. Read that again, PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE. He will have to pay the withheld money, along with penalties and interest, back himself.

Now the President is threatening to withhold Social Security checks, the funds for which were withheld from the payroll of people working for as little as $7.25 per hour, for the explicit purpose of funding those Social Security payments. Is that illegal? Well, of course not; our President is a member of the ruling class.

It should be illegal. It certainly isn’t Presidential. The act of inciting people, especially that of scaring old people who would like to trust their President, is wrong. Apparently it is to be expected from President Obama because his sycophants applaud him. So the despicable act is not illegal. It is, however, morally reprehensible and should tell everyone more than they need to know about President Obama.
