Speaking of Crazy: Vilma Alert
As part of the board of commissioners’ discussion Tuesday night to approve spending $156.4 million on capital projects, Commissioner Vilma Leake, a Democrat, offered this nugget of wisdom about paying for school construction as it related to the board’s decision to delay funding for Stumptown Elementary, a move that drew fire from folks living in north Mecklenburg.
“When you talk about the budget, when you talk about money, don’t beat up on us,” Leake said, “but pay some more taxes on those homes that you have.”
Countered Commissioner Neil Cooksey, who with his Republican colleagues voted against the board’s Democrat-majority’s tax hike budget: “Well, we’ve made sure that we’re paying more taxes on our homes, so we already have that one covered.”
