Uptown Rainmaker
Center City boosters and CharMeck police chieftains are heralding the success of Monday night’s July Fourth celebration, which managed to avoid a repeat of the melee that produced more than 70 arrests and one shooting death in the wake of last month’s Speed Street festival.
Police reported only four arrests associated with the July Fourth celebration (disorderly conduct, an illegal display of fireworks, trespassing, and a drug charge), along with 11 underage teens charged with curfew violations.
But with crowd estimates of only 4,5000 for Monday night’s party –according to Center City Partners – one has to wonder if Mother Nature and the threat of torrential downpour had more to do with the calm, than any wiz-bang plan of containment that dumped hundreds of police uptown, deployed with a massive show of strength to keep any fireworks from erupting, other than the ones planned as part of the official celebration.
Or maybe people just figured it wasn’t worth a trip uptown because of safety concerns, whatever the weather.
