Hailey Snags BPC Endorsement For City Council
It’s more common seeing pigs flying over the Queen City’s world-class skyline than it is to catch the Black Political Caucus of Charlotte-Mecklenburg endorsing a Republican candidate for office; so color me shocked to see Christopher Hailey’s name lumped in with Patrick Cannon and David Howard, two incumbent Democrats, as the BPC’s favored picks for city council at-large.
Or maybe not so shocking; the BPC, after all, has a rich history of placing race above everything else. Which isn’t to discount the merits that Hailey, a Republican who happens to be black, brings to the table. He bills himself as a conservative Republican and promises to vote accordingly on the issues.
That’s about as total of a 180 from the positions and political philosophies embraced by every other city council candidate that snagged a BPC endorsement – Democrats, one and all. To wit:
District 1: Democrat Patsy Kinsey (incumbent) over Republican David Michael Rice
District 3: Democrat LaWana Mayfield over Republican Ed Toney
District 4: Democrat Michael Barnes (incumbent) over Republican Larry Shannon
District 5: Democrat John Autry over Republican Dennis Peterson
The BPC, it almost goes without saying, endorsed incumbent Democrat Anthony Foxx over GOP challenger Scott Stone for mayor.
