School Honors Trayvon Martin With ‘Wear Your Hoodie’ Day

|

I grimaced yesterday as I read a local online publication called the Swampscott Patch, which covers the greater Massachusetts area. The site had a release from the principal of a high school advising that on Friday he would waive the school’s dress code so students could wear hoodies all day and in every class, part of an initiative organized by the school’s so-called Race & Membership class. According to the principal’s statement, “Wear Your Hoodie Day” would “honor” the “memory” of Trayvon Martin, who was described as a “Florida teen who was unjustly gunned down.”

It is amazing to me that a high school principal of a school that is located about 1,000 miles from the scene of the shooting was somehow able to determine that the shooting was “unjust,” even as the Sanford Police Department, the Seminole County State’s Attorney Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are still conducting their investigations. As I have made clear since this case popped up on my radar, I don’t know what happened and neither does the Swampscott High School principal. The Swampscott School Committee should say no way to Wear Your Hoodie Day.
