Principle Pulls Plug On “God Bless the USA”
Just a few weeks back we heard about a school that cancelled a class performance of that Lee Greenwood classic, “God Bless the USA,” and now we hear it again. This time, the Edna Cohen Elementary School in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn, New York, is the site of the dispute.
It seems that the kindergarten class was rehearsing that song for their graduation ceremony when the school’s principal, Greta Hawkins, ordered the practice to stop immediately. She declared the song to be verboten at that point and said, “We don’t want to offend other cultures.” This same woman has previously been the subject of discussion because of her comments about white and Jewish influences at the school and now she launches an all out attack on patriotism and love of country.
Maybe it’s me, but I don’t see how anyone could possibly be offended by hearing a song about the U.S.A., here in the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Oh, and by the way, as an added bonus, check out what was deemed appropriate for the same show that axed “God Bless the USA”:
But Justin Bieber’s flirty song about teen romance, “Baby,” was deemed a fine selection for the show. Hawkins had no problem with 5-year-olds singing lines such as, “Are we an item? Girl, quit playing.”
