Sex Scandals: Charlotte’s Got A Lot
A few years back the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority put its handsomely paid brain trust to work and crafted the genius slogan “Charlotte’s got a lot” to market the Queen City as a tourist destination. Cute, no? A Lot in ChArLOTte? And the marketing wizards who gin up this stuff are pulling down insanely high six-figures salaries.
Anyway, with the latest sex scandal to hit Charlotte it seems a little linguistic twist on the CRVA’s slogan is in order: “You can’t spell Charlotte without Harlot.” It probably won’t fly with the Chamber crowd; but given Charlotte’s history with salacious sexcapades, it at least delivers some semblance of truth in advertising – from SouthPark Madam Sallie Saxon and her stable of HushHush prostitutes to Rielle Hunter and her rompings with John Edwards to, most recently, Dilworth resident Paula Broadwell and her affair with Gen. David Petraeus.
As Diane Dimond asks in an article headlined “Dilworth, Charlotte: Mistressville, U.S.A.?” over at The Daily Beast: “What are the odds that the mistresses of two of America’s most disgraced civil servants live in the same state, in the same city, and even the same neighborhood?”
Well, it happened. The home of Paula Broadwell, alleged lover of ex-CIA Director David Petraeus, is just about 1.6 miles away from the home of Rielle Hunter, the all-too-public mistress of former senator and presidential candidate John Edwards. Both women reside in the tony Dilworth section of Charlotte, N.C.
Broadwell’s two-story brick home, on a big corner lot with an American flag proudly displayed over the front door, is located just north of East Boulevard, the main drag that cuts through this historic district of the state’s largest city. Hunter’s redbrick colonial, which Senator Edwards reportedly bankrolled, is just south of East Boulevard.
Yes, indeed, Charlotte’s got a lot.
The biggest shocker? That we actually made it through the DNC without a full-blown sex scandal.
