GOP Formally Rebukes Sen. Burr for Opposition to NC Republicans Over Obamacare Defunding
Last week, the Craven County Republican Party passed a resolution rebuking NC’s Republican Senator, Richard Burr, for his opposition to: the NC Republican Party, NC-GOP Chairman Claude Pope, the Republican National Committee, and NC’s Republican US House Reps (not to mention one NC Democrat House Rep.), in their attempts to defund Obamacare.
The Craven County resolution was formally passed within days of Senator Burr holding a fundraising event for the current Speaker of the NC House & US Senate Candidate, Thom Tillis. It is somewhat ironic to consider that “unity” & “11th Commandment” have become mantras adopted by the Speaker over the course of the past year, yet one of the Speaker’s most prominent supporters is reprimanded by the Republican Party for failing to uphold both. This is not the first time that Sen. Burr has been chastised by the NC GOP. Earlier this year, Burr was formally rebuked (along with Kay Hagan) by the NC-GOP 4th district for his vote in favor of cloture on gun-control legislation.
From the Craven Resolution:
“… WHEREAS the NC Republican Convention in June passed a Resolution calling upon members of North Carolina’s Congressional delegation “to make every effort to amend the language of subsequent appropriations bills to exclude appropriations delegated to any and all aspects of Obamacare implementation”; and
WHEREAS Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) told journalist Todd Zwilich on July 25, “I think [defunding Obamacare through appropriations] is the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard” and reiterated the same sentiment on September 18 to the Huffington Post, declaring “I said it was the dumbest idea I’d ever heard of. I still think it’s a dumb idea, because you can’t defund Obamacare” ; and
WHEREAS during the time these comments were made, Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) was circulating a letter urging Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) to defund Obamacare, and both Rep. Meadows and Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) were outspoken advocates within North Carolina’s delegation for blocking Obamacare through appropriations; and …”
