Cloudy Case Of Sunshine
Let the sun shine in? It’s a nice thought; but with our local government cloudy with a chance of rain is more likely, making the uptown paper of record’s headline that Commissioners Chairperson Jennifer Roberts endorses an open system of transparency all the more painfully ironic.
This from the chairperson of a board that thumps its chest for disclosing government-driven audit reports of the shambles that has become DSS, while running cover every step of the way for the county manager and the nest of nepotism he’s helped feather under his watch; from a board that has played cat-and-mouse games concerning any and all details about grand jury investigations of the DSS and the local liquor board; from the chairperson of a board that still wouldn’t be taping its closed sessions, but for one commissioner going all covert agent on it and shaming his colleagues into doing the right thing by recording the meetings with a double-super-secret spy pen microphone.
Yes, that same chairperson and that same board; all about sunshine and public disclosure, they are, according to the daily paper.
Sadly, such a disingenuous headline should come as no shocker from a newspaper that habitually chastised former school board member Larry Gauvreau every time he opened his mouth to let the public know what nefarious deeds were taking place behind closed doors – information that the public had a 100 percent legitimate right to know.
Our no-brainer prediction of the week? Look for Mayor Anthony Foxx and schools chief Peter Gorman to similarly grace TCO headers, proclaiming their love of sunshine while hiding behind bureaucratic shadows.
