Big Bucks For Birdseed
Charlotte and Mecklenburg County’s largess with your money gets special notice this week from the North Carolina Institute for Constitutional Law’s Corporate Welfare Weekly newsletter.
The Queen City and the state took top honors in partnering to hand out about $80 million in promised incentives – read government-speak for bribes – to lure Siemens Energy Inc. to land a $130-million expansion of its gas turbine operations in Mecklenburg County. The Charlotte City Council and Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners had been in closed-doors talks with Siemens for months, part of what politicos had dubbed Project Cardinal.
Local GovCo, though, wasn’t the only ones tossing around big bucks like birdseed. As highlighted by Corporate Welfare Weekly, Turbotec Products, Inc., received $76,500 to move its operations to Hickory, while Iredell County tossed Triad Racing Technologies $43,000 to move its Toyota racing engine ops to Mooresville.
Are these the same governments I keep reading about that are so stone broke they can’t afford to provide basic, core services, or is that somebody else?
