Adding Insult To Injury

|

In a scheduling feat of what can at best be called cruel irony, Mecklenburg Commissioners Chairperson Jennifer Roberts is slated to deliver her State of the County address on Thursday, April 15. Tax Day. Insert knife, twist, pour on salt.

Here’s a primer on some buzzwords you can expect to hear from our Democrat-in-Chief: “painful” – as in this is a painful time for all of us; “less” – as in the county is being required to do less with less; “responsibility” – as in we all have to take responsibility for the decisions that have led us to this point; “blame” – as in there’s no one to blame, unless you count the Library Board of Trustees, which commissioners have already tried and it didn’t fly.

“Unique” – as in Mecklenburg County is not unique in the problems we face; “rebound” – as in the county will rebound from this crisis through hard work and sacrifice; “accomplishments” – as is in despite some recent setbacks and difficult times, much has still been accomplished under the county’s leadership; and “taxes” – as in how can I raise them and still get re-elected.

Last but not least, “core government services” – as in a lean budget means that county leaders must focus on providing core government services.

On that note, the county’s multi-million-dollar public relations machine will live broadcast Roberts’s speech on GovCo TV (cable channel 16) and live stream it on the county’s website (mecklenburgcountync.gov) and likely distribute reams of press releases in case anybody missed the event.

Roberts will deliver her speech on Thursday, 10 a.m., from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center meeting chamber. The event is open to the public. I’d say it’s free, but not so much.
