Peacocks Coming Home To Roost

|

Rifling through the city’s budget, a couple numbers stick out like peacocks in a sparrow’s nest: Mecklenburg County’s $2.9 million contribution to the uptown cultural arts facilities and the $11 million the county  is slated to fork over to provide an uptown park for a development planned in First Ward, along with leveraging about $8 million in land value for the same.

Something for commissioners to ponder as they gnash teeth, pull hair and bemoan having to fire teachers, shutter libraries, decimate jail programs, close park facilities and shaft veterans because there’s no money to be found.

The money is there; it’s just being spent on pricey uptown baubles, part and parcel of county leadership’s misprioritized spending and irresponsible management.

Something for voters to ponder come November.
