Pricey Advice

|

What are the latest honey pots of political patronage worth these days in Mecklenburg County? No chump change, according to the most recent disclosure of compensation for members of various advisory boards, ranging from the high profile and controversial ABC Board to the more mundane zoning board of adjustments.

Advocates of advisory boards contend they serve a vital function, dispensing valued guidance to elected leaders and government officials. Critics argue they’re little but beanies doled out for political support and personal/professional gain.

Whatever the case, some advisory board members are handsomely compensated: the chairman of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, for example, rakes in a cool $600 per month, with members receiving $500 per month.

The chairman of the Board of Equalization and Review pockets $125 per meeting, with members getting $100 per meeting, and overtime compensation is set at $15 per hour after an initial three-hour period.

The chairperson of the Board of Motor Vehicle Review gets $100 per meeting, while members make $75 per meeting. Members of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission, including its chairman, are paid $125 per month. The Zoning Board of Adjustments, which is currently inactive, shells out $50 per meeting for its chairman and $35 per meeting for members.
