Driving Blind
Jokes about the abilities, or lack thereof, of some Charlotte motorists notwithstanding, blind drivers might soon be headed down a road near you.
The National Federation of the Blind, in partnership with the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, is developing a vehicle that would use “non-visual interface” technologies, which transmit information to a driver about his or her surroundings, to enable a blind person to drive a car independently.
A prototype of the vehicle is set to debut with a demonstration of a blind driver behind the wheel of a Ford Escape at the Rolex 24 at Daytona on Jan. 21, 2011.
