Back In Black
Former N.C. House Speaker Jim Black, a Charlotte Democrat, has been released from federal prison six-months ahead of schedule and will serve the balance of his time in either a halfway house in Mecklenburg County or under house arrest, WRAL is reporting.
Black, whose full sentence for 2007 corruption, bribery and obstruction of justice guilty pleas was slated to run until March 20111, is having time shaved as a result of his completion of an alcohol treatment program and credit for good behavior behind bars.
While the words “good behavior” and Jim Black are oxymoronic to the extreme, I say more power to the disgraced politico. Having to spend extra tax dollars keeping an old hack politician locked behind bars an extra six months seems counterproductive, but so does an early release for good behavior.
The solution: kill two birds with one stone and actually have Black work for the taxpayers, for a change. Have him spend eight hours a day in a stockade on the House steps, where folks could pay $5 a pop to lob rotten tomatoes at him. I’m thinking you’d have enough takers to put a dent in the state’s budget crisis.
