CMS Outlaws Pens
Just for the record, and because I haven’t seen it reported anywhere else, Turning Point Academy, the home of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ exploding pen, is the friendlier, PR-manufactured moniker for what used to be called Derita Alternative, a facility for students that have run into serious discipline problems at other schools.
That said, Turning Point Academy has now apparently outlawed pens, the result of one that exploded there Monday morning, according to this report from WSOC.
The exploding pen injured one student and triggered the arrest of two others, while setting in motion the search of a northwest Charlotte house and the evacuation of a whole neighborhood. Three firefighters received minor injuries when they field-tested what was deemed “multiple suspicious items and chemicals” found at the house, the domicile of the two students arrested in the exploding pen incident.
