No Cheap Talk From Mayor

|

Facing a potential $9 million shortfall in the city budget, Mayor Anthony Foxx has pounced into action – and hired a newly minted, personal mouthpiece that’s costing taxpayers $70,000 a year. No cheap talk there, folks.

The money quote from Foxx: “We’re in such a challenging time, and it’s more important than ever that I be able to communicate to the public what I’m doing, what the city is doing to move things forward in a positive direction.”

One can only assume that includes paying somebody an exorbitant salary to say things like, “We face challenging times and the city is committed to moving forward in a positive direction,” so the mayor can address more pressing issues like finding cost-savings in the city budget. One place to start would be eliminating superfluous jobs in his office that pay $70K a year.

Not that it could spare any cuts. According to the city budget, the Office of Mayor and Council is barely managing to scrape by with an annual budget of $1.2 million funding seven full-time positions (our part-time mayor carves out four of them with a policy assistant, two secretaries and, now, a spokesperson).
