Vilma Leake: Committee Of None
County commissioners last week approved the officially adopted budget for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, but not without some unexpected squabbling that started and ended with Commissioner Vilma Leake.
Leake, a Democrat, was irked that CMS officials and her own board colleagues have never attended a meeting of an ad hoc committee, chaired by Leake, designed to facilitate improved communication between the county board and school board.
When Commissioners Chairman Jennifer Roberts, a Democrat, pointed out that there have actually been several joint meetings between the two boards, Leake remained ruffled.
“I know we’ve had meetings,” she groused, “but those meetings were staged for the public.”
Her ad hoc committee meeting, Leake insisted, would be different – if she could only get people to attend.
“As chair of that committee, I have continuously struggled to provide a meeting with the county commissioners and the school board,” Leake said. “It has yet to happen. So no one will say I did not do my job as chairperson and did not pursue to have a meeting.”
In other words, no one, not Democrats, not Republicans, not county commissioners, not school board members, wants to have anything to do with Leake or her committee.
That’s the kind of representation Leake is giving her constituents and it should give District 2 voters something to think about as they head to the polls, where Leake faces Republican Lee Ann Patton.
