Toast On A Stick?
Republican Richard Burr rumbled to an easy victory last night, trouncing Democrat Elaine Marshall by a 56 to 43 percent margin to retain his US Senate seat. Although you’d never know if you had your eyes on Mecklenburg County, where Marshall took Burr to the woodshed, nearly flipping the statewide tally and capturing 52 percent of the local vote.
Couple that with Democrat Gov. Bev Perdue toppling former Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory, a Republican, in his own Mecklenburg County backyard – albeit amidst a block of blue in 2008 – and the GOP coming up short, once again, last night in the at-large county commission race, despite a veritable wave of red washing across the rest of the state, and with a Democrat majority entrenched on the Charlotte City Council and holding the mayor’s office, and somebody has to ask: is the MeckGOP done and buried as a political force?
Meanwhile, over in Wake County, the GOP did what Republicans are supposed to do in a tidal wave year, sweeping all four seats up for grabs to regain majority of the board of commissioners.
Wonderful.
