Tea Party For Kids

|

Maybe there’s hope yet for Mecklenburg County. For whatever it’s worth, and admittedly it’s not much, results from the “Kids Voting Mecklenburg” project show Republican Corey Thompson topping the at-large commissioners race. Thompson, a local tea party activist and first-time candidate, finished out of the running in actual election results, trailing top vote-getters Jennifer Roberts, Jim Pendergraph and Harold Cogdell, who took the three at-large spots, as well as Dan Murrey and Dan Ramirez.

Students participating in the project, grades K-12, weren’t able to vote on commission district races; but I’m pretty sure that if they were, they’d have been smart enough to vote Vilma Leake out of office.

The local youth vote, however, apparently still needs some targeted edumacation. In other “election” results, “Kids Voting Mecklenburg” flipped the district attorney’s race, with Democrat Michael Barnes walloping real-world winner Andrew Murray, a Republican, while incumbent Sheriff Chipp Bailey, a Democrat, came up short against Republican challenger Christopher Hailey.

The kids also approved the city’s $204-million bond ask on the ballot, but so did their allegedly smarter adult counterparts. So cut them some slack on that front.
