Security Blanket

It’s not clear from this report exactly what prompted Charlotte-Mecklenburg police to launch new “enhanced security measures” for local elected officials, other than some vague reference to recent shootings in Arizona and Florida.

How some crazed lunatic opening fire in Arizona and claiming the lives of six people and injuring 13, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, or another clearly disturbed individual opening fire and subsequently killing himself at a school board meeting, as was the case in Florida, necessitates extra security for local officials is a mystery. And looks to stay that way, at least for the immediate future. Police Chief Rodney Monroe is staying mum on the issue and only saying that the new measures will be in place for three months, during which time his department will review the safety benefits.

Did the tumult surrounding a few CMS Board of Education meetings play a role in the decision? Has a rash of city councilmembers or county commissioners received threats gone unreported to the public? Will the enhanced security measures require additional funding or draw existing police resources away from other responsibilities? Don’t know, don’t know, and don’t know.

The only answer comes from a memo Monroe sent to officials, indicating the new security measures would require “close communication between CMPD, you and your staff … with the end result always being what is in the best interest of safety for you, your staff and constituents.”

Meanwhile, we have yet another case of repeat violent offenders back on the streets and back in business. This time tragedy was averted when the would-be victim fired a shot at the south Charlotte home-breaking intruders, who were later arrested by police.

Which begs the question: who really needs enhanced security measures – our elected officials or the citizenry under assault by repeat violent offenders?
