Big Brother In The Driver’s Seat
Legislation that would outlaw the use of all but hands-free cell phones while driving is apparently drawing bipartisan support in the General Assembly, with the House slated to discuss the proposal this week.
The penalty for driving and gabbing sans a hands-free device would be a $100 fine. Drivers could still use a hand-hand cell phone in the car to report an emergency or if they weren’t moving – think sitting at a stop light, which is a huge relief because nobody has calls that last more than minute or so. This from WRAL:
Eight states and the District of Columbia have banned drivers from using cell phones, and House Bill 44 appears to have bipartisan support.
“I certainly think anything that will encourage people to use earbuds and Bluetooth and speaker phones and other things to get their hands off the device and back on the steering wheel is a good idea,” House Speaker Thom Tillis said.
So I guess Tillis, a Republican, would also support a ban on eating a burger while driving … or drinking a soda, or dolling up with some eyeliner and blush, or smoking a cigarette. It being for safety and all.
