Rolling With CMPD
Let me get this straight: a heavily redacted report issued by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department identifies a dearth of security staffing at CLT-Douglas airport as a contributing cause in the stow-away death of Delvonte Tisdale, but federal and state funding of nearly a half-million dollars is being used to buy Segways, Harleys, BMWs, and dirt bikes for the CMPD?
Say, maybe we can get some Segways patrolling one of the runways at the airport; CMPD has 34 of them, at a cost just shy of $200,000, purchased with money funneled from the state’s so-called Unauthorized Substance Tax Fund, asset forfeiture revenue from the US Department of Justice, and the Charlotte Area Transit System’s capital budget.
Then there’s the four Harley Davidson FLHTPs, fat cruisers that the CMPD has on a three-year lease for about $73K, courtesy of USDoJ asset forfeiture loot, and the eight slick BMW R1200s, leased for three years at a price tag of $140K from CMPD’s general operating budget. Last by not least, the department recently forked over about $63K to buy 10 new Suzuki DRZ400s – on/off-road dual-sport motorbikes – and have another 10 on order.
