Diverging Diamond Double Take

|

The latest in roadway wizardry is soon to hit the Queen City. This from WSOC-TV:

A complicated traffic pattern designed to ease congestion that has never been used in North Carolina will soon be used in at least four locations in the Charlotte area … The model, called a diverging diamond interchange, essentially allows two directions of traffic to temporarily cross to the left side of the road to move high volumes of traffic.

Work on the initial project in Cornelius, at the intersection of I-77 and Catawba Avenue, is slated to start in 2013, with three other locations on tap for the Char-Meck area: I-485 at Mallard Creek Road, I-85 at Highway 73 and I-85 at Poplar Tent Road.

Andrew Grant, the Cornelius assistant town manager, recently drove through two diverging diamonds in Missouri.

“It flowed extremely well,” he said. “You really don’t realize you’re on the wrong side of the road when you actually drive it.”

Well there you go. What could possibly go wrong?
