RNC Living High On The Hog

|

Or at least that’s the take-away from a POLITICO analysis of RNC expenditures under Chairman Michael Steele, which showed spending on everything from chartered private planes and limos to flowers and fancy food shooting through the roof.

Hire top-dollar, celeb chef Wolfgang Puck to cater the annual Christmas party? Why not. Move the committee’s annual meeting from the gloomy confines of Washington, DC, to sunny Hawaii? Sounds like a winner.

Or not. According to the POLITICO analysis the extravagant spending and luxury living by the RNC seems to be galling heavy-hitter donors and driving them away in droves. Case in point: In 2005, the RNC raised $46 million from donors who coughed over $250 or more and $55 million from small donors. That shifted in 2009, when the RNC snagged only half as much, about $24 million, from big donors and $58 million from smaller ones.

It’s kind of hard to be taken seriously as the Party of fiscal conservatism, when one of your top chiefs is out crisscrossing the country in private jets and limos; and, in the name of “fundraising” blowing through $8,200 for suites and tickets to Washington Nationals baseball games, $5,000 for Redskins tickets, and $4,000 on tour guides and live entertainment for a meeting in posh Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
