Gov Bev’s Comedy Jam
Come one, folks; it’s obvious that Gov. Beverly Perdue was joking when she let this one fly while speaking to a Rotary Club: “The one good thing about Raleigh is that for so many years we worked across party lines.”
I mean, really, working across party lines with a Democrat Kleptocracy that for years abused its power, turned the General Assembly into a private fiefdom where strong-arm politics were regularly employed to advance egregiously partisan gains and amass personal fortunes on the backs of peasant taxpayers?
Seriously? The likes of Marc Basnight and Jim Black working across party lines? What a knee-slapper. That’s absolutely hilari –
Oh, hold on, the supposed joke was about suspending Congressional elections for two years? I stand corrected. Of course, Gov Bev wasn’t joking. She was, as her communications staff is aggressively trying to spin, simply partaking in a little political hyperbole and sarcasm to drive home a point about the current state of Washington gridlock and its deleterious effect on the economy. Perdue’s full statement:
“You have to have more ability from Congress, I think, to work together and to get over the partisan bickering and focus on fixing things. I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won’t hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover. I really hope that someone can agree with me on that. The one good thing about Raleigh is that for so many years we worked across party lines. It’s a little bit more contentious now but it’s not impossible to try to do what’s right in this state. You want people who don’t worry about the next election.”
Hyperbole? Sarcasm? I’m still not buying it, anymore than Perdue’s riff was just a joke that fell flat. There wasn’t any set-up, no pause for a punchline; it’s hard to imagine her even working in a sly and silent smile to let the audience in on the gag.
At the same time, I’m not convinced Perdue actually meant what she said, in the sense that she was fully cognizant of what she was saying. More likely it was a Kinsley gaffe of a twisted strain, one in which Perdue didn’t reveal a truth by accident, but rather unwittingly revealed a truth as she views it; which makes her words all the more dangerously wrong.
It perfectly reflects the progressive belief that liberals could make this world a better place, if only politicians of a certain stripe didn’t have to be held accountable to the whims of the unwashed masses via an outdate method of democracy.
Tough times, economic or otherwise, are exactly when we need more accountability from our government, not less. And that’s no joke – expect maybe to someone of Perdue’s political persuasion.
