Avoid Prison by Posing as a Lawbreaker

|

It’s said that necessity is the mother of invention, but this takes it to a new and truly twisted level. Facing up to 15 years in prison for charges of cocaine and heroin possession, a Salt Lake City man by the name of Jaime Alvarado essentially copped a get out of jail free card by claiming to be an illegal immigrant.

Alvarado told law enforcement and immigration officials that his name was Saul Quiroz and that he’d sneaked across the U.S.-Mexico border illegally, the AP said. Authorities shipped him back to what they believed was his country of origin.

Instead of vanishing into a beach town or big city, however, Alvarado returned to the U.S. And earlier this year, he got arrested. In Salt Lake City. Again.

Alvarado admitted his fake identity to the court and begged a judge to cut him a break on the drug possession charges he’d fled. “It’s my first offense and my last. I want to spend the rest of my life with my kids!” he wrote in a letter to the judge, the AP said.

Alvarado was supposed to report to state authorities in June. He never showed.

A $50,000 warrant for his arrest was issued this week.

I couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried.
