Blue Line Sue Calling It Quits; Pendergraph Jumps In Race, James Opts Out

|

Yes, Sue Myrick did admirable work during her early term-limit pledge years to advance the conservative cause; but after nine terms, a borderline-irrational obsessive fixation on Muslims, and wrangling to land fed funds for Charlotte’s light-rail Lynx Blue Line boondoggle, her act had grown somewhat tiresome.

Myrick announced yesterday that she wouldn’t be seeking re-election, setting off a political derby of potential candidates looking to fill her 9th District Congressional seat. Mecklenburg Commissioner Jim Pendergraph, the county’s former sheriff, made his bid official with a presser today. Commissioner Bill James, meanwhile, announced in an email this afternoon that he’s taking a pass to remain focused on retaining his south Mecklenburg commissioners’ seat.

Others still weighing a run at the heavily tilted GOP Congressional district include City Councilmember Andy Dulin and former state senator Robert Pittenger, both Republicans. On the Democrat side of the aisle, Mecklenburg Commissioner Jennifer Roberts and Jeff Doctor, who challenged Myrick last year, are in the potential mix.

Update: bonus John Paul Jones irony – “I have not yet begun to … something.”
