End Game?

|

The question started churning in my brain when Tea Party favorite, Utah’s Sen. Mike Lee, tossed his weight behind Mitt Romney. The churning turned into a rumbling with a formal Romney endorsement from George H.W. Bush, along with one from Florida’s Sen. Marc Rubio. And now this:

That’s a mighty load of churning and rumbling for Mittevitability. Is it enough?

I think it probably is. With The One seeing an inexplicable surge in battleground state polling, but still showing signs of vulnerability, the GOP power structure can’t afford to prolong its infighting, and sooner or later needs to coalesce behind a frontrunner. I’m thinking it happens sooner rather than later, if it hasn’t already.

Is Romney the best candidate to forward the conservative cause? I have to swallow a wave of nausea and bile to even ask the question, so let’s reframe it for the sake of my esophagus. Is there any other candidate left standing who could better forward the conservative cause that has 1) a legitimate shot (Ron Paul fantasies notwithstanding) of winning the GOP nomination and 2) beating Obama in November?
