Tripping Out

|

News about the school board pondering trips to Reno, Nev., and Memphis, Tenn., to check out the hometown digs of two superintendent candidate finalists got me thinking about the mother of all GovCo junkets that has seemingly, pardon the pun, flown under the radar of late: It’s nearly time for city councilmembers, county commissioners and school board members, along with select staff, to take their little hop across the pond next month to London, England, for the Charlotte Chamber’s Inter-City Visit.

The visit is an annual junket sponsored by the Chamber, but in most cases taxpayers foot the bill for city, county and school officials making the trip. When the group headed to Boston two years ago, taxpayers were stuck with more than an $80,000 tab for the three-day jaunt.

Not certain on a final count of elected officials and government staffers making the trip next month to London, but according to the Chamber’s website the following had signed up as March 1: city councilmembers Claire Fallon, David Howard and LaWana Mayfield; Commissioners Chair Harold Cogdell; County Manager Harry Jones; City Manager Curt Walton; assistant city manager Ruffin Hall; and Deputy City Manager Ron Kimble.

Let the good times roll.
