Team BO’s Demon Pass

|

So the last couple of days I’ve been hearing about the demon pass and Lugosi. What the heck is the demon pass? Another name for Devil’s Highway? Maybe it’s a football term? The 180-degree opposite of Doug Flutie’s Immaculate Reception at Boston College? Lugosi, I thought. Bela Lugosi? And then it came to me…people weren’t asking me about Bela Lugosi, who portrayed the famous vampire Dracula, but rather blood sucker Nancy Lugosi…I mean Pelosi. And no it was not demon pass they were concerned with, but deem and pass.

Deem and pass is perhaps the ugliest rule in the Congressional playbook. It is designed entirely to provide cover for our cowardly congress when they would like to pass a bad piece of legislation but they don’t want their names associated with it. It has been used by both Democrats and Republicans over the years, usually to increase the debt ceiling. Heck, lifting that debt ceiling is, in and of itself, a nifty and nasty trick that results in your children and grandchildren owing more and more for stuff that some folks in DC decided they wanted for themselves.

With deem and pass, the esteemed members of the House of Representatives get to give their OK to changes in a bill that has never actually been voted on. Neat, see? The logic goes a little something like this: We are voting for changes to this bill, so we must have passed it right? Yeah, that’s it; why would be talking about amending a bill if we never voted on it, right? Right. So we’ll just say that we MUST have passed it because, well, the dog ate my legislation sounds so second grade.

Folks believed our Dear Leader when he forced the $819 billion stimulus through by saying that without it unemployment might soar past 8 percent. By the way, after the stimulus the official unemployment rate rose to near 11 percent, while most economists believe that the actual unemployment rate is probably closer to 18 percent. So now your kids and mine will be picking up the tab for all sorts of nifty pork, including close to a billion dollars to buy new cars for federal government agencies. Wonder if they are buying Toyotas? Sure hope they still have some of those Cash for Clunkers coupons around!

Let’s quickly think about our politicians for a moment, painful though that might be. We don’t see statesmen anymore; we see quislings and paper-pushing tributes to the Peter Principle. See, if this health care “reform” were really the enlightened legislation that Team BO tells us it is, it would not need the Cornhusker Kickback or the Louisiana Purchase.

In fact, with the departure of Tickle Me Massa, the threshold for Speaker Pelosi to get this thing passed on an up or down vote has now fallen to 216 and she can’t get those votes. Why? Well, because it is a terrible bill – simple as that. Nobody denies that the health insurance industry may need some tweaking, but you don’t fix minor problems by turning over 1/6 of the nation’s economy to the same people who have given us the Post Office and the DMV.

This bill is a power grab designed to make you and your children and their children more dependent on the government. The politicians know that they will be held accountable by those pesky voters come election time and that is why they are attempting this ugly power grab by using the demon pass. Er, I mean deem and pass.

We must tell Congress to kill this bill!
