Crying Wolf For Racism

|

A headline in the editorial pages of the uptown paper says: EpiCentre officials are hurt by their own silence. The implication is direct: What has downtown Charlotte done now? One reads on and discovers the focus to be the recent arrest of Phillip Agnew at the EpiCentre.

It turns out the editorial is a reprint from Qcitymetro.com. The reader is told a 25-year-old, college-educated black male, “….was arrested after he refused a security guard’s demand that he straighten his hat, which he wore that night slightly askew.”

So, if we are to believe the story, the young man politely refused the EpiCentre guard’s demand that he put his hat on straight; so the guard had him arrested. Make note, we are told the guard is a black male.

“Agnew, who is African American, insists he was singled out because of his race.”

He has previously described his actions as a form of “civil disobedience” and has called for a boycott of the EpiCentre and says he wants an admission of “discriminatory practices” and a public apology.

Let me venture what more likely happened and is happening:

The young man approached the entrance where he was told by security he had to straighten his hat to be allowed in. The young man took exception to the guard’s direction and became increasingly belligerent. After tolerating as much as he felt necessary, the guard asked the police to remove the young man from the premises. Further mouthiness caused the police to arrest the young man and take him into custody and remove him to the downtown holding facility.

Chastened, but not discouraged, the young man decides to cry out racism. The left wing press, ever seeking a reason to destroy society, takes up the cry. Racism, racism, racism, they cry. But no one cares. The cry of wolf has been heard too many times. Vilma and George have worn it out, along with every other whining African-American politician who has been on the short end of a vote or election.

The only thing racist about the incident is the media’s reporting. In giving space to the whine they remind us of their own position: Do not seek the truth of the matter; seek to attack those who offend by their failure to cater to every possible, miniscule, social offense. Toleration and diversity is their mantra. Except when it’s not.

The people who make the dress code for EpiCentre have a right and, more to the point, a responsibility to their patrons and the owners to maintain an establishment of certain type. This is their page in the book of diversity. Those who seek to make their own rules are not allowed. The left wing press, seeking to make the news instead of report it, reports the cry of racism and not the facts of why the young man was actually arrested.

How do I know? I’ve been arrested and while this wasn’t on my citation, the reason was for “being a smartass.” My opinion is: If you didn’t actually do anything – like burglary – it actually takes quite a bit a mouthiness to get a free trip downtown. There’s just too much paperwork involved for a policeman to do it for an askew hat.

Racism? Bah – whiny, self-centered, spoiled crybaby is more like it.
